Week 1.

W 9/3 Introduction to class and first project: Transforming Raw Text. Show previous student Raw Text work. Work session follows with individual critiques late in class at work stations. Homework: Please read Lupton “Letter” section. 

 

Week 2.

M 9/8 Meet in lab for Letter Chapter Overview, Part I.  Have work for us to discuss. Work some more. (Instructor may need to leave at 11:30 due to daughter’s early dismissal.)

W 9/10 Classroom: Critique on Raw Text assignment at 1:50 p.m. sharp. Have printouts up on the wall, ready to go. Move to lab for Letter Chapter Overview, Part I.  View brilliant new Ikea ad.

 

Week 3.

M 9/15 Lab: Introduce Personal Annual Report assignment. Screening of a design documentary on typographer Marian Bantjes. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 2 “Character Formatting” Visit from Jenny Vander Heuvel of Fox River Ad Club.

W 9/17 Classroom: Final Critique on Raw Text assignment. Do not mount. Move to lab:Lecture: Lecture: Letter Chapter Overview, Part II. + Type Terms #1. Also show examples of student Annual Reports. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 3 “Terminology and Conventions”

 

Week 4.

M 9/22 Raw Text assignment due to digital dropbox by 1:50 p.m. PDFs only. Meet in lab and get going on Personal Annual Report. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 6 “Small but Important Details”

W 9/24 Classroom: Take Quiz #1, which covers Lupton “Letter” chapter and Type Terms #1. Work session follows with individual critiques at work stations. Have work for us to discuss.

 

Week 5.

M 9/29 Classroom: Critique on Personal Annual Report assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Black & white is fine, though you may show color if you want to. Quizzes returned. Start reading Lupton “Text” Chapter. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 4 “Leading”

W 10/1 Lab: Text Chapter Overview. Work session follows. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 5 “Kerning and Tracking”

 

Week 6.

M 10/6 Classroom: Final critique on Personal Annual Report assignment. Do not mount yet. Lecture: Type Terms #2.  Introduce Masthead portion of Magazine assignment. Assignment: come up with ideas for the name of our magazine. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 7 “Alignment”

W 10/8 Classroom: Personal Annual Report due, mounted, at 1:50 p.m. Bring names for magazine & vote. Screening of design documentary Typeface, which is about Wisconsin’s Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 8 “Indents and Spacing”

 

Week 7.

M 10/13  Instructor away at workshop. Work session.

W 10/15 Classroom: Take Quiz #2, which covers Lupton “Text” chapter and Type Terms #2. Work session follows with individual critiques at work stations.

 

Week 8.

M 10/20 Classroom: Masthead critique including sample covers. Color printouts if needed. Introduce Currency Assignment.

W 10/22 Field trip to the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in lovely Two Rivers, Wisconsin. We’ll leave campus at 8:00 a.m. sharp and will be back around 1:00 p.m.

 

Week 9.

M 10/27 Lab: Watch film: Helvetica. 

W 10/29 Classroom: Critique on Currency assignment. Have printouts (b&w or color) on the wall by 1:50. No use of projector. Every note & side must be represented. Move to lab. Lecture: Grid. Work session follows. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 12 “Global Formatting with Styles”

 

Week 10.

M 11/3 Discuss Type Terms #3. Read these last two chapters of the Lupton book. Introduce second part of Magazine assignment.

W 11/5 Classroom: Final critique on Currency assignment. Printouts must be in color. Everything must be in place.

 

Week 11.

M 11/10 Lab: work session. Instructor needs to leave at 11:30 due to daughter’s early dismissal.

W 11/12 Classroom: Currency assignment due., 1:50 p.m. sharp. Work session follows. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 13 “Working With Text Wraps”

 

Week 12.

M 11/17 Lab: work session.

W 11/19 Classroom: take Quiz #3. Work session with individual critiques follows.

 

Week 13.

M 11/24 Classroom: Critique on Magazine Design assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Every page must be represented. Black & white ok.

W 11/26 Thanksgiving Break

 

Week 14.

M 11/17 Lab: Work session.

W 11/19 Classroom: Final critique on Magazine Design assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Every page must be represented. Print in color.

 

Week 15.

M 12/8  Magazine project due with full-semester digital portfolio. Details to come.

Thursday 12/11 @ 4 p.m.  Work graded and available for retrieval (at your convenience) in S215.
