Week 1.

M 1/28 Introduction to class, first project: “27th Letter.” Homework: Please read Lupton “Letter” section.

W 1/30 Snow day.

 

Week 2.

M 2/4 Meet in classroom. Bring black pens & markers! Make letterforms. Make even more letterforms.

W 2/6 Meet in lab. Have at least 30 unique letterforms drawn on tracing paper. Share in small groups. Pick favorites: create in InDesign or Illustrator. Lecture: Letter Chapter Overview, Part I.

 

Week 3.

M 2/11 Classroom: Critique on 27th Letter at 1:50 p.m. sharp. Have printouts ready to go. Introduce “Transforming Raw Text” assignment. Lecture: Letter Chapter Overview, Part 2.

W 2/13 27th Letter due to digital dropbox by 1:50 p.m.  Work session follows.

 

Week 4.

M 2/18 Work session: instructor away.

W 2/20 Classroom: Critique on Raw Text assignment at 1:50 p.m. sharp. Have printouts ready to go. Move to lab: Introduce calendar assignment. Presentation: Type Terms #1.

 

Week 5.

M 2/25 Individual critiques at workstations.

W 2/27 Raw Text assignment due to digital dropbox by 1:50 p.m.

 

Week 6.

M 3/4 Work session.

W 3/6 Meet in classroom: black & white critique on calendars. All dates must be present. Work must be printed.

 

Week 7.

M 3/11 Meet in classroom. Take Quiz #1, which covers Lupton “Letter” chapter and Type Terms #1. Work session follows. Start reading Lupton “Text” Chapter.

W 3/13 Meet in classroom: color critique on calendars. Project should be printed and complete. Introduction to Redesigning Currency Project.

Week 8.

M 3/25 Calendars due in classroom at 1:50 p.m. sharp. Lecture: Text Chapter Overview, Part I.

W 3/27 Work session. Individual critiques at work stations.

 

Week 9.

M 4/1 Lecture: Type Terms #2. Watch film: Helvetica

W 4/3 Classroom: B&W critique on Currency Project. Work must be printed.

 

Week 10.

M 4/8  Work session.

W 4/10 Meet in classroom. Take Quiz #2, which covers Lupton “Text” chapter and Type Terms #2. Work session follows.

 

Week 11.

M 4/15 Meet in S21 for “Transforming Spaces” lecture. Color critique on currency follows in classroom. All bills & sides must be present and printed. Introduce Magazine project.

W 4/17 Currency due in classroom at 1:50 p.m. sharp. Lecture: Grid Chapter & Appendix overview.

 

Week 12.

M 4/22 Return quizzes. Watch film: Typeface.

W 4/24 B&W critique on Magazine Project in classroom. Try to print & present all elements. Introduce Type Terms #3.

 

Week 13.

M 4/29 Work session. (Discuss type terms #3.)

W 5/1 Color critique on Magazine Project in classroom. Present all elements.

Week 14.

M 5/6 No need to meet! PDFs of magazine project due in inbox by 1:50 p.m. You can drop off your process materials at 10:20 a.m. when we meet for Design II. Update: Quiz #3 taken when you hand in your work. 

Th 5/9, 4 p.m. Portfolios graded and available for retrieval (at your convenience) in S215.
