Week 1.

M 2/3 Introduction to class and first project: Transforming Raw Text. Homework: Please read Lupton “Letter” section. 

W 2/5 Lecture: Letter Chapter Overview, Part I. Show previous student Raw Text work. Work session follows with individual critiques late in class at work stations. Have work for us to discuss.

 

Week 2.

M 2/10 Classroom: Critique on Raw Text assignment at 1:50 p.m. sharp. Have printouts ready to go.

W 2/12 Introduce Personal Annual Report assignment. Lecture: Lecture: Letter Chapter Overview, Part II. + Type Terms #1. Screening of a design documentary on Marian Bantjes. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 2 “Character Formatting”

 

Week 3.

M 2/17 Classroom: Final Critique on Raw Text assignment. Move to lab: show examples of student Annual Reports. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 3 “Terminology and Conventions”

W 2/19 Raw Text assignment due to digital dropbox by 1:50 p.m. Get going on Personal Annual Report. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 6 “Small but Important Details”

 

Week 4.

M 2/24 Classroom: Take Quiz #1, which covers Lupton “Letter” chapter and Type Terms #1. Visit at 2:30 from Secura Insurance regarding an internship opportunity. Work session follows with individual critiques at work stations. Have work for us to discuss.

W 2/26 Classroom: Critique on Personal Annual Report assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Quizzes returned. Start reading Lupton “Text” Chapter. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 4 “Leading”

 

Week 5.

M 3/3 Lecture: Text Chapter Overview. Work session follows. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 5 “Kerning and Tracking”

W 3/5 Classroom: Final critique on Personal Annual Report assignment. Lecture: Type Terms #2.  Introduce Masthead portion of Magazine assignment. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 7 “Alignment”

 

Week 6.

M 3/10 Classroom: Personal Annual Report due, 1:50 p.m. Bring names for magazine & vote. Screening of design documentary Typeface, which is about Wisconsin’s Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 8 “Indents and Spacing”

W 3/12 Classroom: Take Quiz #2, which covers Lupton “Text” chapter and Type Terms #2. Work session follows with individual critiques at work stations. Chose name of magazine. Work on masthead. Introduce Calendar assignment. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 9 “Breaking and Not Breaking Lines…”

 

Week 7.

M 3/17  Classroom: Critique on Masthead assignment. Name of magazine is Contrast. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50.  Black & white ok, though you can use color if you feel it’s important to your concept. No use of projector. Quizzes returned. Logistical details of Wednesday’s fieldtrip addressed.

W 3/19 Field trip to the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. (10:20 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Week 8.

M 3/31 Lab: work session.

W 4/2  Classroom: Critique on Calendar assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Every date must be represented. Black & white ok. No use of projector.

 

Week 9.

M 4/7 Classroom: Final critique on Calendar assignment. Printouts must be in color. Everything must be in place. Intro Currency project.

W 4/9 Classroom: Calendar assignment due, 1:50 p.m. sharp. Move to lab. Work session follows: get to work on currency. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 14 “Margins, Columns, and Grids”

 

Week 10.

M 4/14  Classroom: Critique on Currency assignment. Have printouts (b&w or color) on the wall by 1:50. No use of projector. Every note & side must be represented. Move to lab. Lecture: Grid. Work session follows. Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 12 “Global Formatting with Styles”

W 4/16   Discuss Type Terms #3. Read these last two chapters of the Lupton book. Introduce second part of Magazine assignment. Watch film: Helvetica

 

Week 11.

M 4/21 Classroom: Final critique on Currency assignment. Printouts must be in color. Everything must be in place.

W 4/23 Instructor away at Design MMoCA. Please use lab time to work on Currency and Magazine projects.

 

Week 12.

M 4/28  Classroom: Currency assignment due., 1:50 p.m. sharp.  Suggested Lynda content* Chapter 13 “Working With Text Wraps”

W 4/30 Classroom: Critique on Magazine Design assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Every page must be represented. Black & white ok. Important: submit PDFs before critique.

 

Week 13.

M 5/5 Classroom: take Quiz #3. Work session with individual critiques follows.

W 5/7 Classroom: Final critique on Magazine Design assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 1:50. Every page must be represented. Print in color. Important: submit PDFs before critique.
