Schedule: 481 Art Seminar

Reminder: those who have already completed 342 Studio Problems in Typography are permitted to pursue alternative typographic projects.

Need more instruction in InDesign? The Lynda.com course “InDesign Typography” with Nigel French is suggested, and you have free access through the university’s portal.

Note: A section of 442/490 runs concurrently with this class. I will often need to meet with these students at 11 a.m. in S216, but I will return to offer assistance.

Week 1.

W 9/6 Nice to see you again! Review syllabus, class assignments, process book basics, intentions for class, and dive into our first project. Slide lecture of related design. Show what students have done in the past.

 

Week 2.

M 9/11 Letter Chapter Overview, Part I.  Here are the most important process guidelines (i.e. how I grade your process materials). Let me know if you need more instructions on how to use FF Chartwell. Work session follows with individual critiques at work stations. Reading: “Letter” section from Lupton book. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

W 9/13 Critique on Personal Report assignment at 10:30 a.m. sharp: Have printouts up on the wall in S216, ready to go. Work session follows.

 

Week 3.

M 9/18 Letter Chapter Overview, Part II. Work session follows with individual critiques late in class at work stations. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

W 9/20 Final critique on Personal Report assignment. Have printouts on the wall by 10:30 in S216. Do not mount yet. View brilliant Ikea ad. Introduce Type Terms #1.

 

Week 4.

M 9/25 Personal Report due, mounted with label on back and process book, at 10:20 a.m. Introduce Currency project. Show examples of student-designed currency. Discuss what needs to be on currency & show currency-related resources. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

W 9/27 Quiz #1, which covers Lupton “Letter” chapter and Type Terms #1. Peer critique on Currency progress: you must have work to share. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

 

Week 5.

M 10/2 Critique on Currency assignment. Have work on the wall by 10:30 in S216. Every denomination must be represented with two unique sides. Start reading Lupton “Text” Chapter.

W 10/4 Text Chapter Overview, Part I. Quizzes returned. Introduce Calendar project. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

 

Week 6.

M 10/9 Final critique on Currency assignment. Have work on the wall by 10:30 in S216. Every denomination must be represented with two unique sides.

W 10/11 Instructor away at AIGA Eye on Design Conference in Minneapolis. Work session.

 

Week 7.

M 10/16 Currency assignment due, 10:30 a.m. sharp. Don’t forget process book. Introduce first part of Magazine Project. Assignment for Wednesday the 18th: come to class with at least five good magazine names.  Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

W 10/18 Share magazine names. Vote on winner. Start to design masthead. Text Chapter Overview, Part II. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

 

Week 8.

M 10/23 (Masthead critique moved to 11/1). Place your concepts both alone and on dummy magazine covers. Introduce Type Terms #2. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

W 10/25 Calendar critique at 10:30 a.m. sharp in S216. Every day in 2018 must be represented.

 

Week 9.

M 10/30 Quiz #2, which covers Lupton “Text” chapter and Type Terms #2. Start reading remainder of Lupton book. Screening of design documentary on typographer Marian Bantjes.

W 11/1 Masthead critique. Note: I need to meet with 442/490 at 11 a.m. in S216, but will return.

 

Week 10.

M 11/6 Calendar critique at 10:30 a.m. sharp in S216. Every day in 2018 must be represented.

W 11/8 Grid chapter overview. The late great Massimo Vignelli on the grid. Introduction/sharing of magazine content.

 

Week 11.

M 11/13 Calendars due. Don’t forget process books. Go over Type Terms 3. Work session with individual critiques.

Week 12.

M 11/27 Watch film: Helvetica.

Week 14.

M 12/4 Work session. I will be in Appleton this morning setting up the senior show with the 490/442 students. PLEASE come to our reception this Friday!

W 12/6 Final critique on Magazine Design assignment. Every page must be printed.

Friday 12/8 6:30–8:00 p.m. Senior Show Reception @ The Draw 800 S. Lawe, Appleton. Please come out and celebrate your colleagues!

 

Week 15.

M 12/11 Final project due. This is the last time we will meet as a class. Digital portfolio due by 5 p.m.tomorrow.
